With the introduction of Minimal Invasive Surgery (MIS) in Pakistan the need for providing training to surgeons in this sophisticated surgery technique was widely felt. However, training system imported from abroad are extremely costly that makes its procurement and usage impossible for most teaching hospitals. Therefore, the need for developing these systems locally at substantially reduced cost and making these available to most hospitals is vital.
To come up with a solutions to the problem identified above a collaborative research team of National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) professors, computer scientists, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers and surgeons at the Holy Family Hospital was formed. This team won an initial grant of USD 500,000 from National ICT R&D Fund to develop the system. They have developed a prototype and named it Al-Zahrawi after the 10th century Muslim Scientist who is generally known as the father of surgery, who developed a number of the surgical tools that are still used today.
After the successful completion of the project, team entered into commercialization phase. SMART SurgiSol team offers surgeons with dynamic training solutions to improve their surgical skills. It provides trainers for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), Conventional & robotics assisted through SMART-Sim, LapBox & SurgBot respectively. In an International Surgical Conference 2013, jointly organized by NUST & Society of Surgeons of Pakistan, SMART-Sim was launched. Product received a favorable response from the surgeons. Approx ten sales order along with some inquiries from Central Asian countries and Pakistan were received.
